Karmijn de Sonnaville Apple Trees

  • Aromatic
  • High sugar
  • Hardy to zone 5

Rich, robust flavor with masses of sugar and acidity and crisp juicy flesh. Karmijn de Sonnaville is one of the strongest-flavored apples comparable to Ashmead’s Kernel. It has an excellent rich aromatic flavor, similar in many ways to Cox’s Orange Pippin.

Like many Cox-style varieties, Karmijn de Sonnaville is a useful variety for juicing. It’s juice makes an excellent base for cider blending.

Karmijn de Sonnaville was raised by Piet de Sonnaville, an apple enthusiast who had prevoiusly worked at the well-respected horticultural research school of the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands.  Starting in 1949 he created numerous crosses, primarily using Cox and Jonathan, along with many others.

Karmijn de Sonnaville is his most well-known creation, a Cox-style variety, but with a distinctly more pronounced aromatic flavor.  Cox’s Orange Pippin is the female parent and the pollen parent is Jonathan.

Apples red or with red flush and larger than either parent.  Flowers are large and beautiful. Grows best in cooler summer areas. It is a triploid variety, and not able to pollinate other apple varieties.
