Believed to have arisen in 19th Century on the farm of Mr Ellis at Newton St Cyres, Devon. Grown widely in the West Country and Herefordshire. Medium sized red flushed fruit. Produces a sweet, astringent juice and medium bittersweet cider. The fruits are relatively large by cider-apple standards. As the apples will not store they should be pressed soon after harvesting.
Ellis Bitter has proved popular for providing good and regular crops of bittersweet cider apples early in the season. It is a vigorous and spreading tree with a good centre leader habit. Good general disease resistance and makes a healthy tree. A vigorous tip-bearing tree with a bienniel tendency. Fruit tends to drop as it ripens.
